Corazon at Shangrila's East Wing

Spanish cuisine is what they serve. Ironically, we dined there BEFORE my trip to Madrid. Like some prelude to what I'd feast on once in Hola Country.

Sangria while waiting for our order. The paella is the Filipino version: not as moist as those served in España. Frankly, I have acquired the taste for the moist paella complemented by a liberal dose of salsa aoili. But Corazon's version should meet the taste of most Pinoys.

Picture

The more popular Spanish dishes aside from paella are the chipirones en su tinta and callos. They're not your everyday dishes; more like what would be served on special occasions like birthday parties, fiestas, and other celebrations.

I love callos. Con arroz or pan. With rice or bread. For breakfast, lunch or dinner. Any which way is good with me. The thicker the tomato sauce base, the better. I'd even mash those chickpeas to render the sauce thicker ;-) Yum!

We also ordered a platter of jamon y quezo but never got the chance to snap a photo. It happens...... much too often, in fact. Well, I'm sure you have an "idea" of the aperitivo we enjoyed. Buen Provecho!

Pies, Salads, Cookies & Sweets. The pies (P85 each) are humongous and meant to be shared. More so if you order the salad with it. (P155 for pie & salad)

Picture

Unless of course you have a hefty appetite. The chunky potato salad is no big deal, really. As for the pies, i like the herbed mushroom best. The creamy chicken pie is ok, at best.

Well if a pie and salad isn't your thing, at least you can order a sandwich, enjoy your P60 hot tea ( Peppermint? Cinnamon? Green?) or try some of the dips for your chips. Me? I went to the nearby store for my Lord Stow egg tart fix. But that's just me.....

I remember watching Sonny Daza with his legendary mom Nora cooking up a show on TV. I've bought some of their cookbooks though I admit I'm a disaster in the kitchen. I'm the type who'd read a recipe, imagine the steps, then "experiment" or ad lib my way through the cooking session.

The stuffed pechay on the menu caught our fancy. That with the shrimps with aligue sauce plus the tostadong adobo was LUNCH for the 4 of us. We like the tinapa-stuffed pechay but found the adobo run-of-the-mill. Not as "tostado" as the menu suggested, and the aligue sauce was certainly lacking in flavor. Didn't taste "sinful" at all.

Midway through lunch, one of us kept overhearing this Caucasian diner raving over his dish of sigarilyas with dried fish cooked in coconut milk. Thank God we gave in to temptation and promptly ordered the same. That saved the day. That and our desserts of sago cake and maja blanca.

Overall, lunch was ok. But I'd really just rave over the sigarilyas and the desserts. But lunch was reasonably-priced so we should really head back and discover the better dishes. Till next time!
