Two Skinny Cooks for Chubby Diners

9/14/2013

Yes, that's what it's called. One of many interesting dining places here in historic Berrima. The cafe scene here is enough reason to visit this village in the southern highlands along the old Hume Highway between Sydney and Canberra.

Picture

There were simple dishes in french portions executed well. There were soups and side dishes available in the takeout counter for those who wish to "extend" their food trip here.

Ooops. No food photos? Hard to forgive myself on this one. But would you guys take my word for it? ;-)

The Old Bakery Cottage In Berrima

It's one place you'd likely wish to put INSIDE a museum. Been there since the 1850's, likely serving the same freshly-baked scones with homemade jams and clotted creams.

Picture

You enter through the side entrance where the present tea rooms are. Inside or out in the porch, you smell the faint aroma of freshly-baked breads. Oh, heaven!

A pinky up for Devonshire tea in this heritage bakery in historic Berrima in the southern highlands of New South Wales. Along Hume Highway between Sydney and Canberra.

Mira Japanese Resto in Manly Beach

Just right across the Manly Ferry Wharf is this unpretentious Japanese restaurant that offers good food, value and service. We were early for lunch and thus beat the crowds. But I hear service staff here are truly attentive.

Picture

There are bento dishes to choose from. We had our fill of assorted sushi, chicken teriyaki and katsudon. All good.

Picture

I am not doing justice to this "find" with these lousy photos, but take my word for it. Check out Mira. Shop2, | 46 - 48 East Esplanade, Manly, New South Wales, Australia

The Friendly Inn @Kangaroo Valley

Another heritage town. Another landmark hotel counting more than a century of service. One cannot retell the history of Kangaroo Valley without mentioning the Friendly Inn Hotel.

Many day trippers on big bikes chose to dine here when we visited. We chose to eat our lunch outdoors in the hotel's backyard. Can't waste this sunny, lovely day this winter in Down Under. Perfect moment to bring out our bottle too!

Service was slow though. And food wasn't exactly outstanding. Good thing we indulged the kids in this cute-sy candy and gift shop in the neighborhood.

Picture

We love all the space though. Eating outdoors and enjoying the breeze in this crispy morn is such a perfect break. When you come by, be sure to bring a good bottle of chardonnay or shiraz.

Lindt's at Cockle Bay Wharf

If you missed dinner with a view here in Darling Harbour's Cockle Bay Wharf, try NOT to miss desserts here. There's a selection catering to varying tastes when it comes to dinner but DESSERTS? Sweet tooths won't waste much time making a choice.

Picture
Picture

Lindt's offers many pleasures but we settled for gelato and macarons. The agony begins only when you needed to limit yourself to a few flavors. Never mind that you'd be served your gelato outdoors in 9* Celsius.

All that just to complete a lovely meal. Freeze ..... And enjoy!

That Famous Robertson Pie

It's a long drive for a pie. But it's NOT just another pie. It's THE FAMOUS ROBERTSON PIE SHOP where pies are taken real seriously!

Picture
Picture

Right along Jamberoo Road and Robertson Drive is this simple, unpretentious pie shop with plenty bragging rights. Not too many eat here but many drive-throughs for boxes of apple and meat pies.

Picture

There were tubs of honey for sale too. But those apple pies would do. Yum!

Nick's At The Wharf

If you happen to be in Sydney's Darling Harbour, grab a seat at Nick's and dine al fresco with this awesome view.

Picture

We did. Cancelled our steak dinner elsewhere and feasted on calamari, olives, feta, hummus, roasted garlic, and more while nursing a glass of chardonnay.

You see, the food quality is enhanced with the view. And don't fret if it's winter in August, the warmers and heaters work at Nick's!
