A DOZEN COOKIES WON'T DO

9/27/2014

I know I should watch my sugar and not indulge in sweets too much. But Ellie makes these cookies so yummy I've gobbled a couple before I even started this blog.

Picture

None of those dry choco chip cookies. None of those deprived-of-quality ingredients. And best, none of those uber-pricey cookies from established bakeshops! If you like those moist and chewy middles, these cookies are for you!

My teens would be delighted with what I'd pair with their milk later today. Those oreos started to get boring even after you've dunked them! (PostScript: Brought a box of 12 to school when I fetched them. Those round delights were gone in half hour)

COMMUNE Cafe + Bar

I woke up with my apo (grandchild) nudging me to take them out for brunch. Now, when that happens, I have the better sense to simply say YES. You never start a day with so much nagging.

I was just secretly wishing this Commune place serves good coffee, as it would be my first cup of my favorite brew for today. I was more than pleased. The cappuccino tasted good even if I had to take a few moments to appreciate how it looks.

Panda 3D

In case you missed it, one cup had a kitty while the other had a panda 3D froth design. The 2nd time we visited, Peppa was in a cup of hot mocha. Latté art? Soooo cute. Apos are so happy.

The breakfast items ranged from Pinoy trad brekkies like chicken longganiza and adobo to commune club sandwiches and a few vegetarian delights. My advice: try the Commune Club Sandwich. Or half of it, served with camote fries and a green salad.

The place looks chic cool and has a relaxing vibe. I'm told the place -- with all those cartoony art -- is a popular events place, and I tend to agree. But I'd stick to the sandwiches and desserts 😄

A new favorite is the cookie shot. Nothing but a cookie shaped into a cup to hold either steamed milk or ice cream. So cool! You may also try their cupcakes.

Commune is right along (#102) H. V. De la Costa Street housed in Liberty Plaza Bldg in Salcedo Village near the corner of Makati Avenue where PCI Bank is. Try their cute-sy coffee and club sandwiches there next time!

A Chori Burger Fail

9/5/2014

Sorry to say but the sweet chorizo with burnt onions on a bed of arugula did not suit my taste. Topped with fried egg in a squid ink (really black!) bun smeared with pepperoncini cream cheese, I failed to appreciate the novelty of the plated gourmet sandwich.

Picture

Many raved about it. But I guess chorizo sandwich is NOT the chorizo burger I've been dreaming about. Epic fail. I expected way too much. And assumed wrongly.

Picture

I must say they do their eggs really well. Fried or scrambled, t'was done well. Our other order of Pork & Beans was er...... ordinary, and way too sweet. Another. Fail.

Picture

The parmesan fries are not bad. But I was disappointed Your Local doesn't serve coffee. I didn't know there's a secret passage to the adjoining coffee shop. The wait staff didn't say. We found that out when we did step out, found the coffee place and seated ourselves right by the secret door!

Picture

Wish we ended our disappointing lunch with a lemon square and a cup of good brew in Yardstick beside Your Local. But today is NOT our lucky day. Lemon square was dry; coffee served not too hot that by the time the sugar and steamed milk were served, the black liquid has turned lukewarm.

Picture

I know. It's NOT fair to pass judgement with one visit. I need to head back. Perhaps order stuff other than the pricey (was it the truffled ketchup?) chorizo sandwich. But hey, maybe it's just me :-( Besides, I hear the beef rendang sliders are really good.

Chef Jayp's SARSA Kitchen

This is one dining place with no pretensions --- just good comfort food the way we remember it. Perhaps a few "twists" here and there, but the product doesn't deviate much from the familiar, the traditional.

Housed in The Forum right smack at the corner of 7th Avenue & 25th Street, it doesn't really look much. But it sure packs a decent crowd that lunch hour we ate there.

Chicken Inasal

Batchoy

You have to honor the resto's roots by ordering the traditional Ilonggo dishes: Chicken Inasal and Batchoy. Typical comfort food, but not exactly outstanding. Let's just say it's good but I've tasted better batchoys elsewhere.

Sizzling Kansi

Tortang Talong

Sizzling Kansi was very tender and tasted real good especially with tons of "sinangag" or fried rice. This beef dish is also available as a soupy dish. Perfect with Tortang Talong (eggplant omelette).

Dilis

Top the fried rice with a separate order of dilis (local anchovies) and you're good to go. The rice dish has a sprinkling of local shrimp paste called "bagoong" --- yum to the core.

Turon

Desserts included the Piaya Ice Cream Sandwich and the Turon. I won't crave for it, but they're enough to satisfy your sweet tooth 😄
